down and left for dead

Years ago when I was coaching high school basketball in Iowa,
I remember one of my teams playing in Ft. Dodge on a cold January night. With 1:05 left in the game Ft. Dodge scored on an earth-shattering dunk to put us down 12 points. The crowd began to leave. Who could blame them … behind by 12 with 65 seconds left in the game … most folks left us for dead.
Suddenly we stole the ball several times … scored three straight 3-point baskets … and watched Ft. Dodge miss some crucial free throws down the stretch. …

On Leadership

On Leadership
I think everyone strives to be a better leader. We read books, take classes and go through the upper management training courses, yet so few people seem to really grasp the core concepts of leadership.
I have been privy to witness all kinds of leadership in the military and in my corporate career and although I am no expert, leadership has started to come easier for me over the years.
Let me give you some background…
When I was 17 years old, I helped found a non-profit corporation. It was a grant based volunteer organization that had out reach programs …

What drives you ?

What is it that drives you toward obedience to God ?
Fear or love ?
In Exodus 20:20 … Moses spoke to his people who were literally afraid to death of God. He said: “… the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.”
However, in John 14:15 … Jesus said: “If you love me, you will obey what I command.”
When I consider the power of the God who can give and take life
… it is ceratinly logical to be obedient. BUT when you love Him for His unlimited and unmatched grace — grace that leads …

Not Your Fathers Oldsmobile

Imagine you just walked into church on Sunday Morning, you greet a few people at the door, everyone is dressed nicely and all smiles, you grab a bulletin and head for a seat.
Suddenly you see a teenager sitting in a pew near the back of the church, he has long, dyed hair, is dressed in baggy pants, has a t-shirt with a bands name on it, he has wrist bands on and is wearing black logger boots with the laces undone.
What is your first impression?
The kid with some problems?
He has a chip on his shoulder?
His parents need to give him …

Hardcore desire

In my last blog I mentioned that a lot of us dads feel seriously unprepared when we finally confront the reality of day-to-day fatherhood.  This is a huge issue for fathers, this feeling of unpreparedness,  and it’s tied in to other feelings of insecurity and inadequacy that run deep within our masculine souls.  Unfortunately, there’s no way to talk about  this as much as we need to in a couple of paragraphs. But someone left a comment after the last blog asking a question that we all desperately want to be answered.  What is it that keeps us from being …

10 Traits of the Man who Dwells on God's Holy Hill

Psalm 15:1 (ESV) asks,
O Lord, who shall sojourn in your tent?
Who shall dwell on your holy hill?
The answer to that question is detailed in the rest of the chapter.
Here are the 10 things (with some explanation) that Psalm 15 identifies as the traits of the man who dwells on God’s holy hill.

He walks blamelessly – there is no questionable behavior in this man, he does what is good and just and merciful, sinful talk and action is far from him
Does what is right – in all circumstances this man strives to please God and carry out the life that Jesus …

the 100 dollar light check

Recently I used a one hundred dollar bill to buy groceries. The cashier took my bill and held it up to the lights above our heads. Then she gave me what little change I had coming back.
A day is coming when you and I will be held up to the light
to see if we are genuine. “The light of the world” will determine our destiny … according to His standards.
Counterfeits will not pass inspection.
” … He (Jesus) will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men’s hearts.”
1 Corinthians …

idols and false-gods … who me ?

Part of Gideon’s story in Judges chapter 6 reveals his intense love for GOD. However, not only did Gideon love GOD … he hated false-gods … so much that he destroyed them.
What about the false-gods or idols in my life … or in yours ?
Do I place my “retirement-god” in front of Jesus ?
Does my “entertainment-god” have a greater value than Christ ?
Do I place my “sports or recreation-god” before the Savior ?
Does my mortgaged “house-god” come before Jesus ?
Is my “vacation-god” on a higher scale than the Lord of Lords ?
Is my “church-god” more important than worshiping the …

Fatherhood is about you, not your kids

I’ve been thinking more about being a dad lately and how pitifully unprepared most of us are for the job. Unless you’re one of those rare guys who actually had a dad who taught you how to be a dad, you probably know what I mean. Most of us are just trying to figure it out as we go and trying our best not to mess up.
One of the things I’m realizing more and more is that being a dad is really a lot more about me than about my kids. What I mean is that being thrown into …
