my-ology

I taught high school Biology for many years. Biology is the study of living things.
Lately I have been studying another kind of “ology”.
Driving in the Chicagoland recently I came up behind a huge Hummer … and the license plate read … “My Toy 1″. In addition, this huge Hummer was pulling a huge boat and the license plate on the boat’s trailer read … “My Toy 2″.
Later I came across an account that Jesus gave in Luke chapter 12 about a man who had such a bumper crop that he didn’t know what to do with all his …

Drop-In

Have you ever done something that you were sure would break your neck?

Today, I took my son, Noah, to the Grand Prairie Skatepark to practice what he had learned this week in skate camp.

I had taken him earlier in the week to show me what he could do, but this time was different.

Last time I was telling him how to do things and encouraging him to try new “stunts”.

He didn’t seem to like my “words of encouragement” when it came to doing a “drop-in” on the 3 ft. quarter pipe.

If you don’t know what a “drop-in” is, take a look at …

We Need Each Other: To Watch Out For

Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.
Philippians 2:4 (NIV)

*** *** *** ***

Each one of us needs other people to watch out for us – to defend us, protect us, and help us stay on track. In the book of Philippians, the apostle Paul tells us that we should look out for each other’s interests, not just our own. What a counterculture verse! In America today, it’s all about me – my needs, my interests, my wants, and my ambitions. But Paul teaches us to look out for others too.

Risks in Faith: God Multiplies

Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.
2 Corinthians 9:10 (NIV)

*** *** *** ***

If you give God your time, he multiplies it. If you give him your money or energy, he multiplies those too. It’s like planting seeds. Farmers know that seeds must be given away – sacrificed by being buried in the ground – to do any good. If you keep a seed in a sack, it does no good, but if you plant it, it …

Risks in Faith: When God Delays

For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay. Habakkuk 2:3 (NIV)

*** *** *** ***

If you ever find yourself in God’s waiting room – waiting for an answer, a change, or a miracle – you just need to stop and trust God. He’s never late or in a hurry, because his timing is perfect.

When I started Saddleback Church, I had no idea that it would take 15 years and 10,000 weekly attenders for us to have our …

Movie Review: The Incredible Hulk

Yesterday Summer officially arrived, although “Summer Season” has been in full swing for the past few months, and we’ve already seen an array of blockbuster summer films including the return of Indiana Jones (unfortunately not as fun as the other three), and Marvel’s continued insistence of dominating summer box offices by offering up the highly entertaining “Iron Man”, and now bringing us “The Incredible Hulk”.
Though not as fluffy and charismatic as “Iron Man”, the Hulk has its charms, and is a welcome addition in the Marvel Movie Family, as it looks like its ugly stepchild, the first “Hulk” movie back …

Risks in Faith: Where God Guides, God Provides

And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:19 (NIV)

If God tells you to do something, he will give you the energy, talent, resources – whatever you need – to do it. Where God guides, he provides.

In 1979, I was finishing seminary in Texas when God said, “I want you to go to the Saddleback Valley and start a church.” There were two problems with that: I had never been a senior pastor, and I didn’t know anything about the Saddleback Valley; I’d never been there, and I …

get out of the tunnel

One of my men’s small group leaders approached me with a problem. He said that there are men in his group that claim Jesus, but do not act like it with their language or actions. After the conversation I walked away thinking …
“What’s the matter with these people ?”
The next day one of my sports ministry leaders approached me with the same problem. In his group people claim Jesus, but do not act like it with their language or actions. Again … I walked away from that conversation thinking …
“What is the matter with these people …

Self-Control Is Christ’s Control

Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Ecclesiastes 4:12 (NIV)

*** *** *** ***

There’s nothing you can do as well without Christ as you can with him. Any struggle you’re facing will be easier to conquer with his help.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking you have to clean up all your messes before you ask God for help. That’s like curing yourself of a disease before you drive down and see the doctor. Go to God first and get his help in all your battles.

The secret of self-control is Christ’s …

H.E.B.

I have a horrible story to tell you.
Its about me and I am ashamed.
It was the first semester of my first year of law school at Baylor University.  I was 21 years old and one of the youngest students in my class.  Law schools are known for being rough on you mentally and emotionally.
One day I was “chewed out” in class for not knowing the answer to a legal issue and I was feeling especially low.  My self-esteem had taken a beating and I needed some time away.
So I went shopping.  Grocery shopping, that is.
I remember walking to the local …
