a Danny-like request
Several of our church members are in a struggle with cancer. I have come to know a mother of four whose husband is in jail and she is left with very little income and no health insurance. Recently a man called me and described his personal war with pornography and how his addiction has cost him his wife, his kids and his job. There are times when I am overwhelmed with frustration. I am mad at Satan and his victories. And, I have to admit, I get mad at God that He allows such brokenness.
Then I met 20 year old Danny. A huge Chicago RUSH fan, Danny was born with spinal bifida and has been in a serious battle with a life threatening infection. The first time I met him at the Children’s Memorial Hospital in downtown Chicago, Danny brought everything into the perfect perspective. Unable to speak due to a breathing and feeding tube in his mouth and nose, Danny wrote these words on his clip board:
“Please pray for me.”
As a 30 year teacher and coach I always thought I could fix most things. But as a pastor I have quickly discovered that I cannot fix people or their circumstances. Through His Son and Holy Spirit Power, God is our only source of redemption and restoration … and all of us need to seek Him with a “Danny-like” prayer request. A request for spiritual healing and the brokenness we may be facing.
“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Psalm 73:26
