Reflecting the Book

The Talking Donkey [Numbers 22:28-30] Then the LORD opened the donkey’s mouth, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?” Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made a fool of me! If I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now.” The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?” “No,” he said. Funny I never heard/read this story until just a couple years …

Reflecting the Book

Talking Snake [Genesis 3:1-5] Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ” “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For …

Reflecting the Book

Sun Stood Still [Joshua 10:12-14] On the day the LORD gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the LORD in the presence of Israel: “O sun, stand still over Gibeon, O moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.” So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jashar. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the LORD listened to …

a life on F or E

On Valentine’s Day a friend of mine died. Her name was Carol, she was 75 years … and the mother of my wife Linda. * Carol battled through the tragic death of her husband in 1971. * She won a struggle with cancer and deep depression in the 90′s. * 3 months ago Carol fell and broke her ankle, but healed quickly. * On February 8 she suffered a serious brain injury … and after a 6 day fight … she died peacefully. Even as a frail woman Carol was more courageous than most athletes I have ever coached. She …

Different parts and different hearts

Why do we all have different passions? So everything that’s supposed to get done will get done. Sometimes we get overwhelmed because we are constantly exposed to people with various passions for service, and when they represent their cause, they are so committed to that which has captured them that we feel guilty for not sharing their zeal. We seem indifferent in comparison. When I was in college, we had chapel every day and almost every day we heard a message from someone who had a passion for some particular ministry. They were usually in some ways recruiting us for …

The fine print

“We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed. Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies.” (2 Corinthians 4:8-10 NLT) These verses are what I call the fine print of the Christian life. When you sign up, you sign up for this, but unfortunately, not too many people read that far into …

Communication breakdown

Lord Jesus, are we talking? It seems like it’s been a while. My voice to you feels weak. There’s no doubt about my belief, but I guess believing doesn’t count as communication. (I think I’ve assumed that it does without really thinking about it.) I can believe in my wife and not talk to her for a week. How long has it been since you heard from me – really heard from me? If I have to ask that question, it must have been a while. Somehow I’ve got you doing nothing but waiting around to hear from me while …

Hardcore desire

In my last blog I mentioned that a lot of us dads feel seriously unprepared when we finally confront the reality of day-to-day fatherhood.  This is a huge issue for fathers, this feeling of unpreparedness,  and it’s tied in to other feelings of insecurity and inadequacy that run deep within our masculine souls.  Unfortunately, there’s no way to talk about  this as much as we need to in a couple of paragraphs. But someone left a comment after the last blog asking a question that we all desperately want to be answered.  What is it that keeps us from being …

Fatherhood is about you, not your kids

I’ve been thinking more about being a dad lately and how pitifully unprepared most of us are for the job. Unless you’re one of those rare guys who actually had a dad who taught you how to be a dad, you probably know what I mean. Most of us are just trying to figure it out as we go and trying our best not to mess up. One of the things I’m realizing more and more is that being a dad is really a lot more about me than about my kids. What I mean is that being thrown into …
