homework horrors ?

When I was in Junior High and High Scool I used to really hate homework. And assignments in college were a total drag. I would much rather be hunting, fishing, playing ball, or just messing around outdoors. So what happened to me ? … I became a science teacher. For more than 30 years I not only gave assignments … I had to read and correct those assignments for about 250 students per year. Isn’t God funny ? Every one of us still has work to do each day. The real question is not whether or not we actually enjoy …

what are they saying about us ?

What a challenge it is for American Christians to live in such a way that the people around us would see GOD through what we say and do. And then reflect God’s goodness with genuine heartfelt gratitude and joy. There could be no greater compliment for our nation than this one found in Psalm 126: 2 “… Then it was said among the nations, ‘The Lord has done great things for them.’ “ This kind of Godly respect comes from an obedient heart. Perhaps it’s time you and I had a heart examin and asked GOD to remove the garbage …

autism and childhood television watching

A new study from Cornell University suggests that there is a ‘statistically significant relationship’ between autism and early childhood television viewing. Dr. Mohler discusses the study here. We know that television is a powerful medium. The American Academy of Pediatrics has advised parents of children under age 2 not to allow any television exposure. The experience of watching television is passive rather than active. The child’s imagination is not required to provide the images — the screen does that for them. Television does not encourage active thought nor does it develop the attention span. Many researchers suggest that the experience …

sticking to a healthy spiritual diet

Genesis 3:6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Isn’t it the worst when you’re on a diet and someone around is enjoying a food you really love but aren’t supposed to eat? You look at the person’s food and can almost taste the flavors in your mouth. Every fiber of your being desires to walk over and ask for a …

the job of a dad and husband

I was reminded today of the great responsibility a father has in raising a girl. I was in the shower when Isabelle came into the bathroom repeatedly saying “Daddy, Daddy!” Stephanie, the Izzy-interpreter, told me that Isabelle wanted me to look at her pig-tails. She does this every time Stephanie dresses her or combs her hair. I believe that this behavior is part of the hardwiring God has placed in girls. Woman are made by God to seek love and affirmation from a man. As girls this man is to be their father; as grown women it is to be …

I wanna be like dad

At the Las Vegas FCA Breakfast last Sunday before the Arena Bowl Championship game Kurt Warner told this story about one of his sons, Kade, who was 5 years old at the time. It seems Kade was telling his mother (Kurt’s wife Brenda) how much he really wanted to be just like his dad when he grew up. Brenda began to tell Kade how great it was for him to want to be a football player just like his dad … but God may have other plans about what kind of job he has. Kade responded with … “Oh I …

Don't Get Tripped Up

Ever wonder why good things happen to bad people? I have. Ever question God as to why evil people get away with their stuff? I have. Ever been angry or bitter because of it? I have. Ever ask yourself, “What’s the point of being faithful and doing the right thing?” I have. Ever wear yourself out trying to understand these things? I have. So I went to God’s Word… “Truly, you put them on a slippery path and send them sliding over the cliff to destruction.  In an instant they are destroyed, swept away by terrors.  Their present life is …

use as directed

It’s great to teach yourself and your children Bible verses … but the intent of scripture is to point us toward Jesus and to live like Him. Our faith comes alive when we apply God’s Word to our daily lives. The Bible is like medicine; it goes to work only when we apply it to the infected areas. When you have your quiet time or when you are reading scripture with your children … be sure to “use as directed” and apply the medicine. “I am your servant; deal with me in unfailing love, teach me your principles. Give discernment …

lions and tigers and butts, oh my!

Since I had to work on Memorial Day I took Tuesday off to spend exclusively with my family. We decided it would be fun to have a picnic and then explore the Como Zoo. My kids loved it. It was such a delight to watch Jacob run from exhibit to exhibit, calling out to us when he located the different animals. His favorites were the monkeys, the lions and the cougar. In fact, after watching the lions, tiger, and cougar Jacob started walking around the zoo on his hands and feet, pretending that he too was a ferocious feline. But …

performance philosophy

Many parents practice the “performance philosophy”. If their child brings home good grades, makes the team, or shows respect and manners… then they are granted certain privileges. Moms and Dads show love and kindness toward their children when they are “good” … and they take great delight in telling relatives, friends, and neighbors. I am sure glad GOD doesn’t operate that way with me. The Bible says that the LORD takes delight in me regardless of my circumstances. His love and kindness for me is NOT based on my performance. If it were, I would be lost. So would you. …
