Favorite movies with Father/Son themes
Father/Son themed movies have always gotten me. Probably because I never knew my real father until I met him six weeks before he died. Another story………..
My favorite Father/Son movies? Field of Dreams, October Sky, The Rookie
Your favorites? Or favorite scenes?

Does Star Wars count? Godfather?
Seriously one of my favorite father/son movies, which I highly recommend, is Frequency.
It speaks to me because the father son relationship is portrayed as a tight friendship. Good stuff.
I’ve not seen Frequency but I will now. The movies that appeal to me strongly are ones in which there is a strong message of how much the sons needs and wants the father’s approval.
Jesus received his Father’s approval at his baptism. “This is my Son!”
I must say that one of my all time favorite movies is Legends of the Fall – the cinematography in that movie is stunning. The relationship that Col. William Ludlow (played by Anthony Hopkins) has with his son Tristan (played by Brad Pitt) reminds of the story of the prodigal son.
In the middle of the movie, Tristan leaves home for some time, and upon his return, he is graciously and lovingly welcomed by his father. The scene where this takes place is moving, and it’s refreshing to see Anthony Hopkins embrace Brad Pitt as a father loves his son.
an underrated but very powerful movie on Father/Son is “Life as a House” with Kevin Klein and Gardner’s comment on the Hopkins/Pitt scene is dead on, good stuff
Legends of the fall and Life as a house both very good movies.
What about The Patriot and the relationship between Gibson and his boys. Good stuff and one of my all time favorites an absolute must see.
I would like to put in a few dad-son movie moments I’ve had a decent cry to…
:::Blow (the whole damn thing)
:::The Truman Show (when Truman sees his father)
:::Good Will Hunting (his lack of father and how he makes a father out of the psychiatrist)
I have a few more that I could be able to present, but these are all I have for you right now.
You guys are awesome – I actually obsess over father/son movies – it’s my favorite genre.
Where do I start…?
I love Star Wars for that reason, also Indiana Jones III, Catch Me If You Can, Scent of a Woman, LXG (haha, not so good plot-wise), Die Hard 4, About A Boy, The Unsaid and Red River. There must be more… anymore that anyone can recommend? I’d be /eternally/ grateful ^_^
No one has said Big Fish?! After watching Big Fish for the first time, I wanted to call my dad and say “I love you dad”… Frequency and Blow mentioned earlier two of my favorites.
what about Finding Nemo? Yes, it is a cartoon. But it is also a story about a son making his own path.
Rudy is a great one that makes me choke up.
Will Smith’s did a father’s role
A struggling salesman takes custody of his son
Good Movie
Nominated for Oscar. Another 9 wins & 17 nominations
October Sky is not a bad movie, actually. Families in the coal mining communities were just so stubborn back then…at least that’s the impression I got from the movie.
I watched a wonderful movie about a father and a son called; The Eagle and the Son. It is set in Mongolia and has subtitles but is very moving and one of the best movies I have seen in a long time.
