performance philosophy
Many parents practice the “performance philosophy”.
If their child brings home good grades, makes the team, or shows respect and manners… then they are granted certain privileges. Moms and Dads show love and kindness toward their children when they are “good” … and they take great delight in telling relatives, friends, and neighbors.
I am sure glad GOD doesn’t operate that way with me. The Bible says that the LORD takes delight in me regardless of my circumstances. His love and kindness for me is NOT based on my performance. If it were, I would be lost. So would you.
Listen to this part of Paul’s letter to the Romans:
“… God’s wonderful kindness … is free and undeserved.”
Romans 11:6
Teach your chid that GOD loves them no matter what they have done … and so do you. Then through your relationship with the LORD demonstrate what it means to be obedient out of love.

Great reminder! I feel that, as a parent, I want to spur my child on to be and do her best. But I always try to remember to temper that with grace, love and encouragement when all is not “successful.” It’s hard, but I agree, we all would do well to remember that God’s wonderful kindess is indeed free and undeserved!
