porn or breastfeeding, which is the greater societal risk

There is a sickening epidemic spreading across the United States that doesn’t get half the public attention of Bird Flu or Gas Prices. The proliferation of accessible pornography (delivered through multiple mediums such as film, internet, satellite radio, cable), coupled with weakening moral standards and misguided tolerance among the general population, is causing sexual addiction and misbehavior to run rampant. Just take a look at the statistics posted on Family Watchdog, a website that allows you to search for any registered sex offenders who may possibly be living near your children.

* 1 of 5 girls will be sexually molested before her 18th birthday.

* 1 of 6 boys will be sexually molested before his 18th birthday.

* 1 of 5 children have been propositioned for sex over the Internet.

* 2 of 3 sexual abuses are perpetrated against teenagers or younger children.

* 90% of sexual assaults are committed against someone the perpetrator knows.

* The median age for female molestation victims under 18 is 9.6 years old.

* There are new 400,000 victims of sexual assault every year.

* There are over 550,000 registered sex offenders in the US.

* There are over 100,000 sex offenders that fail to register in the US.

* 76% of serial rapists claim they were molested as children.

* Over 40% of male juvenile delinquents were molested as children.

These are staggering numbers.

Dateline has run numerous specials about adult men who chat with teenagers online to solicit sex. There is a sickness that exists in our culture surrounding sex and no one wants to talk about it. We’d rather complain about more serious matters. Please read my sarcasm.

Get this, the August 2006 edition of Baby Talk magazine recently raised some eyebrows by putting a close-up picture of a nursing baby on its cover (no nipple and some breast could be seen). Inside the magazine one article reported: A national survey of public beliefs about breastfeeding published in The Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that 57 percent of those polled said that women should not have a right to breastfeed in public. And a whopping 72 percent said that it’s inappropriate to show a woman breastfeeding on TV programs.

Are we as a nation serious? We have no problem with sexually laced language and sexual behavior displayed on television, but we can’t handle it if a mother needs to fed her infant in public? Come on, even hard core Darwinian’s should understand the fact that a kid needs to eat the milk a mother’s breast supplies! 57% say a woman doesn’t have the right to breastfeed in public – I wonder how many men think that it should be a woman’s right to walk around with no shirt or bra on if she wants to?

Stand up for breastfeeding and stand against the sexual perversion of society through porn. It is imperative that the innocence and safety of our world’s children be fought for.

Brenton … well stated. You have addressed the porn issue with some staggering stats. Have you ever visited http://www.xxxchurch.com ? We had a special Sunday service just dedicated to porn … we called it “Porn-free Sunday”. The Holy Spirit has been working in men and women’s lives here since we put this together back in March.
    Thanks for your insights !

Have you ever noticed how sin hardly ever only affects the sinner?

I think some Christian men think that Porn “doesn’t hurt anyone but myself”. This is the GREAT LIE of porn. Over time porn can ruin your sex life with your wife. Pornography makes “sex” more convenient by not having to deal with someone else’s desires. Also men can fantasize about being with other women while in the moment with their wives.

Men… porn is a marriage WRECKER! Don’t believe the lie that your sin doesn’t hurt anyone. It hurts the person God’s called you to love above all other people… your wife.
