Truth Fiction and the Grey Area in Between
I read the headline today ‘Da Vinci’ undermines faith, survey claims….. in the article “interviewed more than 1,000 adults last weekend, finding that 60 percent believed Jesus had children by Mary Magdalene — a possibility raised by the book — compared with just 30 percent of those who had not read the book.”
Yet this is a fiction book… but yet people are taking it as fact…. I feel it is sad that we have become a society that hold our morales and beliefs so loosely…. I haven’t read the book nor do i plan to go see the movie as i don’t want to put something in my mind that will cause me to question my faith as it only takes a little crack before you have a wide open hole…
I just hope that people who do see it know that it is fiction and that if they want to know the truth about Jesus they read the Bible.
For some reason Dave, people are afraid to read the Bible – maybe because they are scared what they might read. That their sin will be pointed out, and that they will be instructed to change. But they will also be missing the parts where God tells them that He loves them no matter what. That all they have to do is believe in Him, believe that He sent Jesus to die for our sin, and that Heaven is all theirs…
Sad, yes it is.
It’s important to remember that gnosticism is nothing new. It comes in waves. People are always looking for ‘evidence’ – however implausible – to somehow disprove or discredit Christianity. They haven’t found it, yet.
Just see this as another opportunity to spread the Word. How many people are going to use this movie as an opportunity to ask questions, when they never would have before?
Also, I’ve read the book, and my biggest complaint is with the quality of the writing. It’s poorly-written, selectively-researched fiction. As is most fiction. But the plot isn’t bad; I think it’ll make a much better movie.
I suggest reading it, if only to learn what you’re up against. Which isn’t much. I’m sure your faith will prevail!
Funny you should encourage people to read the book, Jared. The pastors of our church have done the same. In fact we’re just finishing a four week study on the the DaVinci Code! No, not as factual evidence. But our faith should NEVER NEVER EVER be afraid to answer any questions. We should all be up to the task of answering tough questions. And if we’re not we’d better have a way to get those answers. (For example; a good understanding on how to use a concordance, a Godly person we can reference for help, pray the Holy Spirit will make the answers clear, Good books on a given topic)
I have not read the book yet. I do plan on borrowing it from a friend or getting a copy from the library.

I look at it this way.. if you want to learn something and follow it you learn about it and study it… you don’t learn about myths that surround it or half truths etc… you go to the expert and study… While i think the Davinci code can be a great talking point and as christians can be used to clear up the false aspects of it and remind them it is Fiction.(i don’t need to read it to know when someone is discussing it) if you spend time in the truths the false aspect will be blantant and you will be aware…. sorry this is a stickler for me and no where in the Bible does it talk about trying to learn satans ways to avoid his traps it talks about knowing the word and thy father and walking in spirit and it truth…
