what counts, substance or style ?
Annoying, trash talking professional athletes seem to get a lot of attention. Unfortunately our kids often mimic what these super stars say, what they wear, and how they act.
As a young boy in the 50′s and a teenager in the 60′s … I believe this may have started with big mouth Mohammad Ali and Joe Namath. It seemed all of a sudden young people wanted to talk big and live big. Style became a greater value than substance.
Many times Jesus encountered a similar attitude. He often exchanged thoughts with “religious super stars” and found that the core of their worship was motivated by their love for tradition and ceremony … rather than a genuine love for God and people.
While God has given me the privilege to serve Him in a so called “mega-church” environment … there are times when I think I’m really something special. Sure, like I can take any credit for God’s many blessings around here. Often HE has to bring me back to the truth of HIS goodness … and the richness of who HE is. After all, it is the substance of your life in Christ … not the style … that counts for HIS Kingdom.
” … count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.” Romans 6:11
